Fat Boy Member Ride July 25, 2009

First invited bike ride as a group. I really did not want to push group rides for several reasons. First I know we are all busy and for me it is just easier to ride when I get the time. Second I want this bike group to be all about commuting to work and biking for enjoyment.

With that said, Some of us are going to ride from Gomm Elementary on Saturday July 25, 2009 at 7 AM to Verdi, back to Gomm for 12 miles. We are slow so no restrictions on how slow or fast you want to go. Once at Gomm we are going to continue - or some are going to get back in their cars - to Jungle Java downtown Reno for coffee and then ride back to Gomm. Total ride will be about 18 miles.

This is a nice easy ride and is very popular so there will be a lot of riders out there, which is nice so everyone can go at their own pace. I will have some free fat boy biking shirts for those that want one, on the back it promotes the Poker Run, so please wear them as much as possible to spread the word. So I hope you can join us and please bring your friends. Membership is not required.

Prize List for Fat Boy Poker Run

The prizes are starting to come in. I hope this is only 30% of the list by the time the event starts. So far we have:

Trek 21 inch Classic Cruiser donated from Scheels.

RoadMaster Mountain Bike donated from Wal-Mart.

Two night stay at the Grand Sierra Resort - good for any days.

Dinner for Two at Toucan Charlies at the Atlantis.

Room for Two at Harrahs Casino in Reno. Good for Sunday - Thursday only.

Black Bar Mitts for a road bike.

Reno Aces 4 Pack good to use next year on any Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday game.

Other prizes we have in the works are:

Gift Certificates from the participating bars.

Messenger Bag and assorted items from New Belgium.

Assorted sweatshirts - Badger - Fat Boy Biking.

Other items that I don't want to list just in case they do not come in. I will keep you posted.

Event Reviews:

No events to report. Some of us were going to go to Yerington on July 25th but we have decided to have our own little run. Besides the run started at 6 am which meant that we would have had to leave town around 4:30 am.

We Need Your Help

I know I said this would be sent once or twice a month but in the beginning I think I will be sending it out more often just because this is all new information. I do ask that you forward this and talk it up to get your friends to join. The goal is to have over 500 members join this year. Help reach the goal and get your friends to join.

These are really cool. We will be raffling of one pair for a road bike at the Poker Run. Mitts for Commuter bikes will be available this fall. This company is out of Carson, so they are local and with the economy the way it is, we all need to support our local businesses. Besides they have a sale going on right now.

Old News - Daily Trackers There are several out there. I have formed Fat Boy Biking Groups on these two.

Daily Mile:
I like this because you can tally all your rides - big or small. Also you can find other routes people are putting in. As soon as you put your route in - this takes a few minutes - you can always just check the route when you ride it again. If you are a runner-walker- you can track those miles too.

After joining Daily Mile - Click on Groups and type in: fat boy biking and then click JOIN!

RTC GREENRIDE:

This one is also a great tool. It is simple and easy to use. This is for commuting to work only - which is the main goal of Fat Boy Biking. I like this because all you have to do is put in your home address and work address and you are done. Also you can find other people who are biking near you. An added bonus is that you can try to set up a carpool for those days you will not be able to ride.

RTC also provides a calculator page that will give you your miles, money saved, calories burned, and carbon monoxide emissions that you are saving.

Sign up only takes a few minutes. After joining RTC GREENRIDE - join our group, join Washoe County School District, or maybe your work place is listed - if not you can be the leader and start your own group. It does not matter who you join up with, just join and start tracking your commute.

I will leave this up on future newsletters so new members know where to go. After this edition it will always be at the bottom of the news letter.
