Fat Boy Member Ride August 1, 2009

I really did not want to push group rides for several reasons. First I know we are all busy and for me it is just easier to ride when I get the time. Second I want this bike group to be all about commuting to work and biking for enjoyment. But with that said we had a good time last Saturday so we will be going out again this Saturday. There was four of us on the first ride. I know two might not be able to make it this weekend but I will have my fat --- out there Saturday.

With that said, Some of us are going to ride from Gomm Elementary on Saturday Augusut 1, 2009 at 8 AM to Verdi, back to Gomm for 22 miles. We are slow so no restrictions on how slow or fast you want to go. There were probably 35 total riders out on the the street last week.

Event Reviews:

The ride last week was at a slow rate for most of us. It was nice just to cruise and talk. The back hill on the Verdi Loop is short but pretty steep. A couple of us had to walk part of it.

Riders of all abilities can ride the Verdi Route. We hope you can join us this weekend.

We Need Your Help

I know I said this would be sent once or twice a month but in the beginning I think I will be sending it out more often just because this is all new information. I do ask that you forward this and talk it up to get your friends to join. The goal is to have over 500 members join this year. Help reach the goal and get your friends to join.

Please pass the word on our first Poker Run. The goal is to have 100 people to preregister and over 200 at the event. You can preregister at:

Bar Mitts

These are really cool. We will be raffling of one pair for a road bike at the Poker Run. Mitts for Commuter bikes will be available this fall. This company is out of Carson, so they are local and with the economy the way it is, we all need to support our local businesses. Besides they have a sale going on right now.

Bike Commuting

Found this article on the web and will put up other articles from this blog every now and then. The address for all the articles is: http://www.runmuki.com/commute/index.html

BIKE COMMUTING: A BETTER WAY TO TRAVEL

High gas prices. Expensive car payments. Traffic delays. Road rage. Expanding waistlines. There are many great reasons to consider traveling to work by bicycle. It's an effective, healthy, inexpensive, and fun alternative that is attracting more and more commuters all over the world.

Today, there's a lot of information on bicycle commuting available on the Internet. When I first created this bike commuting tips site, there were very few sources of information on just how to do it. And the more you know, the more enjoyable bike commuting becomes.

Most of the people I know travel by means other than the bicycle. For the most part, they're still internal combusters. Automobile drivers. It's the norm, isn't it? In a society like ours--where more money is spent advertising automobiles than is spent on the entire national mass transit system, where everyone's background assumption equates travel with driving--it isn't easy to make the shift to bicycle commuting. I can attest to that. As detailed in this essay, I made many mistakes. I did it all wrong.

This article isn't intended as the comprehensive guide to commuting by bicycle. It's not a "program" intended to work for everyone, in every situation. It merely relates the hard lessons learned by one cyclist over many years of riding to work everyday. My hope is that prospective bike commuters will avoid my errors. If nothing else, my experience demonstrates that it can be done. The addiction to driving can be broken, the necessity of mass transit strap-hanging can be avoided. The following might, just might, encourage others to discover how bicycle commuting can enhance their lives.

In the Works

Fat Boy Events that we are working on:

Fat Boy Poker Run in May.

Fat Boy Century Ride in late May or Early June.

More Details to follow as we set up sponsorships.

Old News - Daily Trackers There are several out there. I have formed Fat Boy Biking Groups on these two.

Daily Mile:
I like this because you can tally all your rides - big or small. Also you can find other routes people are putting in. As soon as you put your route in - this takes a few minutes - you can always just check the route when you ride it again. If you are a runner-walker- you can track those miles too.

After joining Daily Mile - Click on Groups and type in: fat boy biking and then click JOIN!

RTC GREENRIDE:

This one is also a great tool. It is simple and easy to use. This is for commuting to work only - which is the main goal of Fat Boy Biking. I like this because all you have to do is put in your home address and work address and you are done. Also you can find other people who are biking near you. An added bonus is that you can try to set up a carpool for those days you will not be able to ride.

RTC also provides a calculator page that will give you your miles, money saved, calories burned, and carbon monoxide emissions that you are saving.

Sign up only takes a few minutes. After joining RTC GREENRIDE - join our group, join Washoe County School District, or maybe your work place is listed - if not you can be the leader and start your own group. It does not matter who you join up with, just join and start tracking your commute.

I will leave this up on future newsletters so new members know where to go. After this edition it will always be at the bottom of the news letter.
